Frequently asked questions
Short answers about the free plugin and Pro, performance and caching, privacy, page builders and common setups.
Free and Pro#
What does the free plugin include?#
Four popup types (Only Image, Image and Content, Template, Form), modal and inline display, page load and click triggers, page targeting, frequency rules, subscribe and contact forms with Mailchimp, spam protection, Custom CSS and the Popup Library. See the table in the Introduction.
Do I need the free plugin when I have Pro?#
Yes. Wing Popup Pro extends the free plugin and cannot run without it. Keep both active.
What happens to my popups if I deactivate Pro?#
Nothing is deleted. Every setting stays stored. Popups that need Pro stop being shown, and the Popups screen lists them. Activate Pro again and they return as they were.
Why can I see Pro settings in the free plugin?#
So you can look at every option before deciding. They are marked (Pro) and take effect once Pro is active.
Performance and caching#
Will popups slow my site down?#
Wing Popup loads its files only on pages where a popup or form will actually appear, and only the parts those popups need. A page without a popup loads nothing from the plugin.
Does it work with page caching and a CDN?#
Yes. Everything that differs per visitor (frequency, schedules, devices, carts, A/B tests) is decided in the visitor's browser, and role and country rules by a small uncached request. Forms do not depend on a nonce that expires inside a cached page.
After creating or changing a popup, clear your page cache once so visitors get the new version.
Does it work with optimisation plugins?#
Yes. If a "delay JavaScript" or "combine files" feature breaks a popup, exclude Wing Popup's scripts from it.
Privacy#
Is Wing Popup GDPR-friendly?#
The plugin is built to collect as little as possible. Frequency counters live in the visitor's browser, not on your server. Analytics counts events and stores no IP address and nothing a visitor typed. Form submissions are stored only if you switch that on. You remain responsible for your own use: consent boxes on forms, a privacy policy, and a consent notice for third-party scripts.
Does the cookie notice make my site compliant?#
It records and announces the visitor's choice, and passes it to Google Consent Mode and tag managers. It does not block third-party scripts itself. See Cookie notice.
Does the plugin call outside services?#
Not by itself. Outside requests happen only for features you set up: your email service on a signup, Cloudflare when you choose Turnstile, YouTube, Vimeo or Google Maps when a popup embeds them.
Building popups#
Can I use Elementor or the block editor to design a popup?#
Yes. Design a Template with either and show it with the Template popup type. See Template popup.
Can I show a popup when a button or menu item is clicked?#
Yes, with the On Click trigger and the element's CSS selector. See Triggers.
Can I show different popups on different pages?#
Yes. Each popup has its own page rules. See Page targeting.
Can several popups be active at once?#
Yes. Each follows its own triggers and rules. Avoid two popups with the same trigger on the same page: they would open on top of each other. Give them different delays or pages.
Can I use a form without a popup?#
Yes. Every form has a shortcode and a block. See Display a form.
How do I stop a popup from showing to logged-in users or to me?#
With Pro, set Display Options → User Roles → Login State to Guests Only. In the free plugin, the frequency rules still apply to you like to any visitor.
How do I test a popup without waiting for the cooldown?#
Open the page in a private window, or set Frequency Mode to Always while you build.
Languages#
Can I translate my popups?#
The texts of your popups are whatever you type, in any language, including right-to-left languages. The plugin's own screens are translation-ready. For a multilingual site, create one popup per language and limit each to its language's pages with page targeting.
